The Montreal Canadiens celebrated Canada Day on Wednesday by signing forward Ivan Demidov to an eight-year, $73 million contract extension.
Agent Dan Milstein confirmed details of the deal, which carries an average annual value of $9.125 million. Demidov had been scheduled to become a restricted free agent after the 2026-27 season.
Demidov, 20, topped all NHL rookies last season in goals (19) and points (62) in 82 games and finished second in the Calder Trophy voting for Rookie of the Year. He added three goals and nine points in 19 playoff games.
Demidov’s deal includes $57.6 million in signing bonus money and a 10-team no-trade clause for the final three seasons of the deal (2032-33 through 2034-35), according to TSN.
A first-round draft pick (fifth overall) by Montreal out of Russia in 2024, Demidov has recorded 64 points (20 goals, 44 assists) in 84 career games.
