Logan Henderson pitched effectively into the sixth inning, Luis Lara drove in three runs and the Milwaukee Brewers gradually pulled away from the San Francisco Giants en route to an 8-2 road victory Tuesday night.
Brice Turang collected three hits while Jackson Chourio and William Contreras added two apiece for the Brewers, who evened the three-game series with the Giants at 1-1 and the season series at three games apiece.
Henderson (5-1) remained unbeaten in July by limiting the Giants to two hits and two walks in his 5 2/3 scoreless innings. The rookie improved to 3-0 with a 2.57 ERA in four July starts after missing all of June with a back injury.
The right-hander was pulled with two outs and nobody aboard in the sixth, having thrown 93 pitches. The Brewers led 5-0 at the time.
After Chourio drove in the game’s first run with a single in the third, the Brewers used their speed to put up three more in the fourth in a two-out rally. Lara had a walk and a stolen base, Cooper Pratt an RBI single and a stolen base and Turang a two-run single to highlight the uprising.
Giants starter Landen Roupp (7-9) was pulled with two outs and the bases loaded in the fourth, down just 2-0. JT Brubaker served up Turang’s two-run hit.
Roupp, who also had been unbeaten in July entering the game, was charged with four runs on four hits. He struck out one and walked three.
Lara added an RBI groundout in the fifth and a two-run triple in the seventh. Chourio capped Milwaukee’s scoring with a run-scoring groundout in the eighth.
The Giants avoided a shutout when Bryce Eldridge launched the game’s only home run, a two-run shot, in the eighth. The homer was his 11th of the season.
Pratt scored twice for the Brewers, who have won eight of their first 11 games after the All-Star break. Contreras also had a triple for Milwaukee, while David Hamilton had a double.
The Giants managed seven hits and were 0-for-3 with runners in scoring position, losing for the seventh time in their last 10 games.
