Vladimir Guerrero Jr. smashed his first spring home run in a six-run first inning and George Springer drilled a three-run shot in a seven-run fourth as the host Toronto Blue Jays demolished the Tampa Bay Rays 14-1 on Sunday in Dunedin, Fla.
Alejandro Kirk (3-for-3, three RBIs) and Jesus Sanchez (2-for-4, four RBIs) both hit two-run homers in the first, and Addison Barger went 3-for-4 with an RBI as Toronto racked up 19 hits in support of starter Dylan Cease. Cease lowered his spring ERA to 0.93, delivering five scoreless innings of three-hit ball with six strikeouts and two walks.
Rays starter Nick Martinez was roughed up for 11 runs on 12 hits in 3 2/3 innings, including three home runs. Carson Williams’ first spring home run was the lone bright spot offensively for Tampa Bay, which was limited to four hits.
Yankees 6, Phillies 2
Aaron Judge launched his third spring home run to back starter Wil Warren, who limited Philadelphia to just one hit over five scoreless innings in New York’s home victory at Tampa, Fla.
Facing Phillies starter Aaron Nola, Judge ended the right-hander’s day with a blast leading off the fifth. Nola gave up three runs on six hits over four-plus innings, striking out four and walking three. Kyle Schwarber belted a two-run shot in the eighth, his second of the spring, to get Philadelphia on the board.
For the Yankees, Ryan McMahon, J.C. Escarra, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Amed Rosario notched RBI singles. Warren struck out six and did not issue a walk to close out his spring on a high note.
Red Sox 6, Pirates 3
Masataka Yoshida ripped a tiebreaking two-run double to highlight a four-run eighth inning, helping Boston defeat host Pittsburgh in Bradenton, Fla.
Red Sox starter Sonny Gray, who is slotted to follow ace Garrett Crochet in the rotation, struck out nine with no walks over six innings of two-run ball in his final spring start. Antonio Anderson went 2-for-2, delivering the tying RBI single in the eighth.
Henry Davis and Shawn Ross smacked their second spring homers, both solo shots, and Jake Mangum chipped in with an RBI single for Pittsburgh. Mitch Keller, the No. 2 starter behind ace Paul Skenes, held Boston to a single run on three hits over 3 2/3 innings with five strikeouts.
Cardinals 3, Astros 2
Starter Michael McGreevy earned his fourth win of the spring, limiting Houston to one run over five solid innings to guide visiting St. Louis to a tight victory in West Palm Beach, Fla.
Jordan Walker went 2-for-4 with his first spring dinger, a solo shot, while Nathan Church notched an RBI double and Jose Fermin added an RBI single for the Cardinals. Four relievers limited the Astros to one run over the final four innings.
Taylor Trammell belted a solo homer and Cavan Biggio hit an RBI groundout for the Astros, who went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
Twins 7, Braves 3
Host Minnesota fell behind in Atlanta’s three-run first, but Luke Keaschall launched a go-ahead three-run home run in the fifth en route to a victory in Fort Myers, Fla.
Byron Buxton smacked his first spring homer, a solo shot in the fifth, for an insurance run. Austin Martin went 2-for-2 and scored a run and Matt Wallner added a pair of hits. Starter Taj Bradley recovered from a tough opening frame to last 3 1/3 innings.
Reigning National League Rookie of the Year Drake Baldwin was the Braves’ hitting star, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run. He singled in the first two runs and improved his spring batting average to .325. Reynaldo Lopez endured a tough start, yielding four runs in 4 2/3 innings.
Orioles 8, Nationals 1
Gunner Henderson drilled one of Baltimore’s three home runs and starter Kyle Bradish blanked Washington for 5 1/3 innings in a home victory in Sarasota, Fla.
Henderson and Colton Cowser each hit solo shots and drew a bases-loaded walk, while Jeremiah Jackson smashed a late three-run blast to put the game out of reach. Bradish struck out three and permitted four hits and three walks.
Daylen Lile’s third spring home run was the only offensive highlight for Washington, which was held to five hits. Starter Mitchell Parker posted eight strikeouts while giving up two runs over four innings.
Marlins 4, Mets 3
Jay Beshears tripled home the tying run and scored the winning run on Spencer Bramwell’s sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth as Miami rallied past New York in Jupiter, Fla.
Andrew Salas, Heriberto Hernandez and Jesus Bastidas each collected two hits for the Marlins, who got an RBI forceout by Kemp Alderman. Opening Day starter Sandy Alcantara allowed three runs and five hits while striking out six in 4 2/3 innings.
Mets No. 2 starter David Peterson tossed five innings of one-run ball in his spring finale, giving up five hits and one walk with four strikeouts. In a three-run fourth, Bo Bichette hit an RBI double, Jorge Polanco lifted a sacrifice fly and Brett Baty added an RBI single.
