Cats eight-game win streak explodes in Game 1 loss to Carolina

The Tar Heels scored five in the 1st and never looked back in an 18-2 victory

LOWLIGHTS: No. 5 North Carolina 18, Arizona 2

CHAPEL HILL — No. 5 North Carolina jumped on Arizona starter Owen Kramkowski for five runs in the 1st inning and knocked him out with three more in the 2nd as the Tar Heels blitzed the Wildcats 18-2 Friday in Game 1 of their NCAA Super Regional at Boshahmer Stadium.

UNC (47-13) can wrap up a trip to the College World Series with a win on Saturday.

Three-run home runs by Luke Stevenson and Hunter Stokely were the big blows early against Kramkowski who uncharacteristically walked two and hit a batter.

Stokely drove in five and Stevenson added four.

The Tar Heels blasted four home runs on the game. Sam Angelo had a three-run shot.

Ace starter Jake Knapp (14-0) did the rest. He allowed just two earned runs on nine hits in seven innings while striking out three.

Adonys Guzman went 4-for-4 for the Wildcats with a double and an RBI.

Raul Garayzar will start for UA on Saturday against Jason DeCaro.

Our coverage begins with Brian Jeffries at 8:50 a.m. with 1st pitch scheduled for 9:06. The game will be televised again on ESPN2.
