Tucson–The Pima volleyball team (4-7) stepped away from ACCAC conference play as it hosted Ottawa University VR on Wednesday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium.
The Aztecs defeated the Spirit in straight sets 25-13, 25-11, 25-22. They have won four of their last five matches.
The Aztecs took the lead in the first set when sophomore Julia Baird and freshman Olesya Tratsevych help score five straight points to take an early 8-3 lead. Pima took their first double digit lead at 19-9 and closed out the set by scoring another five straights to take a 1-0 lead.
The Aztecs took control early in the second set by scoring six straight points to go up 9-3 as Tratsevych had two aces during that stretch. Up 10-4, the Aztecs continued to assert their dominance with another eight straight points to make it 18-4 as Baird helped secure points with her serve. Pima maintained their double-digit lead as Baird put down a couple kills and freshman Alexia Hutchens (Salpointe Catholic HS) had an ace to help put away the second set and give the Aztecs a 2-0 lead.
The third set featured 12 ties and eight lead changes. With the score tied at 12-12, the Aztecs scored three straight points; two came from freshman Addison Gilvin (Sahuarita HS) as had back-to-back aces to make it 15-12 and forcing the Spirit to call timeout. The Aztecs matched their biggest lead of the set on the next point, but Ottawa VR scored four straight to tie it at 16-16. Neither team would hold more than a two-point lead for the next 12 ensuing points. With the score tied at 22-22, the Aztecs scored the final three points to put the match away.
Baird finished the match with a team-high 11 kills to go along with three blocks. Hutchens had eight kills and six digs.
Sophomore Julia Weatherbie (Mountain View HS) posted 15 assists and two aces while freshman Julia Ford (Catalina Foothills HS) added nine digs and two aces.
