Kiefer Sherwood scored a hat trick as the visiting Vancouver Canucks earned a 4-3 shootout victory over the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night.
Drew O’Connor earned two assists and Jake DeBrusk scored the lone shootout goal as the Canucks won for just the second time in six games.
St. Louis outshot Vancouver 39-18, but their winless streak was extended to six games (0-4-2).
Canucks goaltender Kevin Lankinen thwarted the Blues by making 36 saves through regulation and overtime, then stopping two more shots in the shootout. The hosts’ final attempt, by Brayden Schenn, hit the post.
Pius Suter scored a goal and earned an assist for the Blues. Dylan Holloway and Jimmy Snuggerud also scored, and Cam Fowler and Oskar Sundqvist had two assists apiece, and Jordan Binnington made 15 saves.
The depleted Canucks sustained another injury 33 seconds into the game. A shot hit winger Brock Boeser in the lower midsection and knocked him out of the game.
Sherwood completed his second career hat trick 7:04 into the third period to put Vancouver up 3-2. Aatu Raty shattered his stick on his shot attempt from the right circle, but Sherwood stepped in behind him to score through traffic.
The Blues tied the game 3-3 with a power-play goal, as Suter punched in the rebound of Fowler’s slap shot at 10:48 of the third.
St. Louis’ successful challenge for goaltender interference erased Evander Kane’s apparent go-ahead goal with 2:42 left and sent the game into overtime.
Holloway put the Blues up 1-0 by taking Sundqvist’s pass in the right circle and snapping a shot through Lankinen’s pads at 3:23 of the first period.
The Canucks tied the game 1-1 on their second power play of the opening period. Kane found Sherwood at the left post for a point-blank goal.
St. Louis moved ahead 2-1 on a power play in the first minute of the second period. Snuggerud scored from the right wing off Fowler’s outlet pass.
Sherwood tied the game 2-2 midway through the middle period on a breakaway. He caught the Blues in a line change after collecting O’Connor’s outlet pass.
