TANQUE VERDE — In the ever-evolving world of region makeup in Arizona high school football, No. 12 Tanque Verde is King of the Conference 2A South.
The Hawks blasted visiting 5th ranked Willcox 42-14 on Friday night in a 2A South Crossover Game that featured the best teams on each side of the region.
Tanque Verde (8-2, 4-0) finished 1st in a 2A South Region 1 that features Palo Verde, Bisbee, Tombstone and Santa Rita.

Willcox (8-2, 3-0) was tops in the 2A South Region 2 alongside Benson, Santa Cruz Valley and Desert Christian.
The Hawks swooped to a quick two-touchdown lead and never looked back. Senior running back Cooper Payne ran for a pair of scores, including a 57-yard scamper in the 4th quarter to help seal the deal.
It has been a steady build for a Tanque Verde program that just six years ago went 0-10 and had lost 10 of their previous 11 meetings with the Cowboys.
Arizona Wildcats legend Jay Dobyns took over and shepherded the team through Covid-19, leading the Hawks to the program’s 1st playoff appearance in 2022.
Jeff Bollnow took over the following season and Tanque Verde returned to the state playoffs, winning for the 1st time in an opening round game against Parker.
