Lancers pounded 58-7 by state’s top ranked team
CHANDLER — The battle of the best from Phoenix and the best from Tucson was not much of a contest.
Brody Vehrs threw three touchdown passes as last year’s Open Division state runner up Basha blew out visting Salpointe Catholic 58-7.
The Bears (7-0, 2-0) defense dominated the Lancers holding them to just 119 yards.
Salpointe Catholic (4-3, 0-2, 6A South) used multiple quarterbacks in the game. Starter Matthew Avelar went just 4-of-8 passing for 25 yards. He did run for the Lancers lone late score.
Senior Rayce Alvarez completed 8-of-15 for 83 yards.
Basha was anointed as the state’s #1 overall team this past week when the 1st ranking were released by AZPreps365.
The Lancers were 12th in the Open Division and in Conference 6A.
Elsewhere, undefeated Desert View is No. 2 in Conference 5A. Marana checks in at No. 7. Sahuaro (5-2) is 6th in 4A, followed by reigning champion Mica Mountain at #9. Reigning Conference 3A champion Pusch Ridge Christian is No. 4, Willcox is 6th in 2A, Hayden (#1) and St. David (#3) are among the best area teams in Conference 1A.
