TUCSON – Miranda Stoddard and Sydney Stewart homered for Arizona as the No. 13 seed Wildcats opened the NCAA Tournament with a 13-5 run-rule win over Santa Clara in the 1st game of the Tucson Regional on Candrea Field at Hillenbrand Stadium.

The Broncos Hope Alley hit a solo home run off Stoddard in the 1st inning to open the scoring but it was all UA after that.

SANTA CLARA POSTGAME PRESS CONFERENCE

Arizona scored in every inning. The Wildcats took the lead with four runs in the 2nd. Stoddard smacked a solo home run in the 3rd to give the Wildcats a 5-1 advantage. She also pitched four innings, allowing just a run on three hits.

Santa Clara sliced their deficit to 6-5 with a four-run 4th off Arizona reliever Ryan Maddox.

Stewart’s second grand slam of the season ended the game in the bottom of the 5th.

UA (46-11) will play in the winner’s bracket game on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Mississippi. The Rebels beat Grand Canyon 7-4, snapping the Antelopes 23-game winning streak.

Santa Clara (32-21) will face Grand Canyon (46-7) in an Elimination game at 3:30.
