Pima claims 4th men’s region title in 8 years

Aztecs beat Chandler-Gilbert 64-61 for 1st Nationals trip since 2019

CHANDLER — Pima Basketball is back on the mountaintop.

The No. 2 seeded Aztecs defeated No. 1 Chandler-Gilbert 64-61 Saturday to win the program’s 4th NJCAA Division II Region I championship in the last eight years.

It was Pima’s first region title since 2019.

Freshman point guard Cohenj Gonzales (Mesquite) led the way with 20 points. He a perfect 10 for 10 from the free throw line. Wes Ball (Marana) finished the game with 11 points to go along with nine rebounds.

Jaylen Alexander was named the game’s Most Valuable Player as he finished with 10 points, nine rebounds and five blocks.

The Aztecs earn an automatic bid into the NJCAA Division II National Tournament on March 18-23 in Danville, IL.
