Wildcats win the rubber game against Huskies to get 3rd round with USC

HIGHLIGHTS: Arizona 58, Washington 50

LAS VEGAS — Arizona’s defensive pressure forced Washington into 20 turnovers Wednesday night and the Wildcats beat the Huskies 58-50 in the 1st round of the Pac-12 Women’s Basketball Tournament at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

UA (17-14) had 13 steals, five from All Pac-12 defender Helena Pueyo.

The Wildcats will play 2nd seed Southern California in the quarterfinals on Thursday night.

Four UA players finished the game in double-figures. Pueyo and Esmery Martinez both scored 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor. Pueyo added 5 assists to go along with her 5 steals.

Freshman Skylar Jones scored 11 and Breya Cunningham had 10 points and 7 rebounds.

The Wildcats used crisp passing to dominate in the paint (40 points).

Dalayah Daniels led Washington (16-15) with 13 points and 10 rebounds. The Huskies will have to wait and see if their 16 wins and 6 victories in Pac-12 play are enough to get them into the NCAA Tournament.

The Women of Troy (23-5) beat Arizona in both regular season meetings. USC won 81-64 in Los Angeles and rallied from 10 points down in the 4th quarter to find victory in Tucson 95-93 in triple overtime.

Tipoff is 7 p.m. The game will air on KTUC-AM Freedom 1400.
