Cardinals win 71-62 to drop fifth loss in six games on ASU

TEMPE — Brandon Angel had 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Stanford to a 71-62 victory Thursday night over Arizona State in a Pac-12 game at Tempe, Ariz.

Stanford (11-9, 6-4) avenged a loss to Arizona State (11-10, 5-5) at home on Dec. 29.

The Cardinal has won four of their last six games while the Sun Devils have lost five of their last six.

Stanford’s Michael Jones had 18 points behind a 5-of-7 performance from 3-point range and Maxime Raynaud finished with 12 points and 17 rebounds.

Arizona State was led by Jose Perez’s 14 points and six assists.

Frankie Collins and Jamiya Neal each had 12 points and Adam Miller had 10.

Arizona State started the game making three 3-pointers to take a 9-0 lead, but Stanford quickly responded with eight unanswered points.

Arizona State made only one field goal in the last four minutes of the half but held on to a 33-29 lead at halftime.

The Sun Devils had eight turnovers and Stanford seven by halftime.

The Cardinal finished the game with 14 turnovers and Arizona State 11.

Stanford opened the second half outscoring Arizona State 12-2 to take a 41-35 lead with 16:02 remaining.

Arizona State answered with an 11-4 run to take a 46-45 lead with 13:01 remaining.

The Sun Devils mounted a 60-54 lead with 7:27 left but Jones answered by making his fifth 3-pointer of the game, which started a 13-0 run that put Stanford ahead 67-60 with 1:47 left.

Arizona State snapped ended Stanford’s run with Collins’ layup with 1:13 left to cut the lead to 67-62.

After two free throws by Stanford’s Benny Gealer with 1:09 left increased the lead to 69-62, Collins and Miller missed from 3-point range for Arizona State.

Raynaud made a dunk in transition to cap the scoring.
