Big wins reign supreme at MLK Classic

Desert Christian and Cholla win 1290 Spotlight games

TUCSON — Tyson Dobbins scored 16 points and Adam Valvala had 14 as Desert Christian pulled away in the second half to beat Benson 53-39 in the 1290 Boys Spotlight Game at the annual Martin Luther King Basketball Classic at McKale Center.

The event is put on every third Monday in January by Tucson Unified School District in association with Coaches for Charity.

Jonathan Brown added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Eagles (16-4).

In the 1290 Girls Spotlight Game, Cholla dominated Desert View 48-17 for their first win of the season (1-9). Yuri Shimosaka led the Chargers with 23 points.

The event began early with a contest between elementary school boys teams from Gallego Intermediate Fine Arts Magnet School and Peter Howell. Gallego came out victorious 25-6.
