Pima Women’s and Men’s basketball cruise past South Mountain

TUCSON — Pima Basketball closed out the pre-Christmas part of their schedule with an impressive home sweep of visiting South Mountain Saturday at the West Campus Aztec Gymnasium with the women winning 80-34 and the men taking their game 118-59.

Dominique Acosta posted a second straight double-double with 10 points and 14 rebounds as No. 14 Pima knocked off the Cougars

Acosta had 18 points and 14 rebounds in the Aztecs’ win on Wednesday at Chandler-Gilbert. Freshman Rylei Waugh finished with a game-high 17 points, along with eight rebounds, six assists and five steals.

The Aztecs (8-2, 5-1 ACCAC) played 15 players, and everyone scored points in the game.

The men also ranked 14th in NJCAA Division II ran swiftly past SMCC scoring 59 points in each half.

The Aztecs (9-1, 4-1 in ACCAC) hit 13 three-pointers in rebounding from their loss earlier this week to Chandler-Gilbert.

Freshman Cohenj Gonzales led the way with a game-high 22 points as he went 5-for-8 from beyond the arc. Sophomores Jaylen Alexander and Dillan Baker (Salpointe Catholic HS) each posted 20 points.

The Aztecs are off for the holiday break and will return for the Aztec Holiday Classic from Dec. 28-30 with all games at the West Campus Aztec Gym. Both squads will play Bismarck State College (ND) on Thursday, Dec. 28 with the men’s game tipping off at 3:00 p.m. followed by the women’s matchup at 7:30 p.m.
