Canyon del Oro outlasts Yuma Catholic 35-27 for 4th-ever football state championship
TEMPE — Canyon del Oro won a fourth high school football state championship Friday night beating top seed Yuma Catholic 35-27 at ASU Mountain America Stadium.
The Dorados (14-0) ran their way to Tempe on the back of senior Kayden Luke and the big bruising fullback finished the job with 217 yards and two touchdowns on 31 carries.
CDO wins their first gold football since 2009. They will add this one to a trophy case that also includes titles in 1975 and 1976. It’s the second championship for head coach Dustin Peace who led the Dorados to that title 14 years ago.
The Shamrocks (13-1) defense was simply no match for Peace’s running attack.
Chase Laux ran for scores of 80 and nine yards. Grant Young returned an intercepted pass 58 yards for another touchdown.
Canyon del Oro and Sabino become the first two Tucson schools to win state championships in the same year since the Dorados did it with the former Tucson School of the Deaf and Blind in 1976.
Rivals Amphitheater and Flowing Wells also won state title in the same 1975 season.
