AZHSFB: Canyon del Oro grinds out a 17-15 victory over Mica Mountain

The Dorados remain unbeaten and in the Open Division playoff conversation

TUCSON — Kayden Luke scored a pair of rushing touchdowns as Conference 4A No. 3 Canyon del Oro edged 2nd ranked Mica Mountain 17-15 in the Game of the Regular Season in Southern Arizona.

Both teams entered the contests at Dorado Stadium with 6-0 records.

CDO sophomore kicker Reece Douglas booted a 21-yard field goal midway through the 4th quarter to give the Dorados a 10-9 advantage.

Luke scored the second of his two touchdowns from 14 yards out to help Canyon del Oro stretch their lead to 17-9.

The Thunderbolts though marched down the field in the final two minutes scoring on a two-yard touchdown pass from Jayden Thoreson to Jimmy Leon with just

Canyon del Oro however snuffed out Mica Mountain’s two-point attempt to tie the game when lineman Sa’Kylee Woodard sacked Thoreson.

It was the first victory for CDO head coach Dustin Peace over his high school coach Pat Nugent. The latter had beaten his former player three times prior, twice while coach at Cienega (2015 and 2020) and last season in 1st meeting between the Dorados and Thunderbolts.

Canyon del Oro finishes out their regular season with a road contest at Pueblo and then home games with Sahuaro and Walden Grove.

Mica Mountain hosts Sahuaro and Walden Grove before finishing the season at Catalina Foothills.

Both teams are in the Open Division state tournament conversation. The Thunderbolts and Dorados were 9th and 10th this week in the rankings. The top eight teams from Conferences 4A-6A will qualify for the state top football playoff.

Despite CDO being on Fall Break, a huge crowd showed out to see the Dorados beat Mica Mountain 17-15
