TUCSON — College, junior college and high school action dotted the schedule Thursday night in Southern Arizona as the Fall season is officially in full swing.

NCAA SOCCER

A penalty kick save in the final minute of the game by goalkeeper Hope Hisey allowed Arizona Soccer to hold on for a 1-1 draw against Grand Canyon in the Wildcats home opener on Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium.

Nicole Dallin (2) scored the lone goal for UA (0-1-1) on a rebound shot in the 8th minute.

An estimated crowd of 1,200 watched the first UA athletic event of the new year.

Arizona returns to action Sunday, Aug. 27 at Northern Arizona in a 1 p.m. matchup.

NJCAA VOLLEYBALL

Sophomore Abby Whatton finished with 10 kills in a 4-set Aztecs loss.

Pima Volleyball opened their first-ever Aztec Classic with a 3-1 loss (25-14, 17-25, 22-25, 21-25) to No. 6 Grand Rapids Thursday night at the West Campus Gymnasium.

Sophomore Abby Whatton (Canyon del Oro HS) finished with 10 kills while freshman Taylor Crawford (Ironwood Ridge HS) had 31 assists and sophomore Morgan Hains (Canyon del Oro HS) recorded 25 digs.

The Aztecs are back at the West Gym on Saturday when they host Southeastern (NC) at 11:30 a.m.

HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Francisco Mendivil’s 1-yard touchdown run was the lone score of the game as Cholla knocked off Copper Canyon 7-0 in the 1st game of the Coaches for Charity Kickoff Classic.

POSTGAME REACTION

It was the season-opener for both teams.

Willow Canyon will visit Desert View on Friday in the 2nd game of the Kickoff Classic.

There are 31 games on the schedule in Week 2 as it’s opening Friday for Conferences 4A-6A.

Salpointe Catholic will host Marana in a highly anticipated game while Sabino and Sahuaro renew their rivalry on the east side.
