A View From The Cheap Seats … UFC, MMA, MLB and the Kitchen Sink

What a wild weekend of sports we had.  I worked on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday on CBS Sports Radio, and towards the end of my show on Sunday night, a caller reminded me of how special the weekend was, especially compared to what we were doing a year ago at this time.  UFC was trying to put on shows on an island, MLB and the NBA were shutdown and I didn’t know what a bubble was.  He was right, after all we have been through we need to step back everyone once in a while and be thankful for what we have in our lives.  Family, friends, health , sports and everything we have in the kitchen sink are gifts we should appreciate whenever we can.

I was pretty excited for McGregor Proier Part 3 this weekend. Coner is a headliner and a show stopper. I am not a hardcore MMA fan, but I will watch tentpole events and know about the top of the card fighters and was intrigued about this fight. Poirier rocked McGregor last time out and I wanted to see what Coner had left in the tank.

The hype got kind of ugly with some of the stuff that Coner had coming out of his mouth and as fun as he is and as good as he is at playing the heel, it was way over the top with he called out Poirier’s wife. But in the end Coner’s mouth wrote a check his body could not cash.

In the end, Coner ran his mouth and couldn’t back it up. Yes his lower leg snapped and there were plenty of Coner fans who called all night saying it wasn’t a real loss, but the record book doesn’t lie! Coner is 1-2 vs Poirier and has lost 3 of his last 4 fights. He took the money to fight Mayweather and hasn’t been the same since. Dana White says he will give us a 4th fight, but do we really need it? I’ll watch it, but I like watching car chases on Facebook, and that’s what another fight would be just another car chase, or in Coner’s case, the former champ chasing another armored truck looking for money.

I have had a lot of fun in Las Vegas over the years. I spent some time working in Sin City doing shows at the MGM Grand and the Mandalay Bay over the years. A lot of times I was comped or had a line pass and was treated like a Rock Star, but in all the times I was having a good time in Las Vegas I have to admit I never was a baller like this guy!

Game 3 of the NBA Finals was historic. Lets get the game itself out of the way. The Suns were done when DeAndre Ayton picked up his fourth foul.

Without Ayton the Bucs were able to run wild in the low post and the game was over. Couple that with a off night for Devin Booker, the Suns had no chance in game 3.

With that said I think the Suns will bounce back on Wednesday and we will have a good NBA Finals. Now on the real big story of Game 3. The Greek Freak was historic.

He is only one of 6 players to have 40 point games back to back in the NBA Finals in the history of the game.
Lebron, Shaq, MJ, Rick Berry and Jerry West are the only others to ever pull that off. Think about that in the history of the game only six men have been that dominate in back to back games ever.

I am not sure who is going to win the series, but I do know something there will soon be a passing of the torch in the NBA. Magic and Bird to Michael, MJ to Kobe and Shaq, Kobe and Shaq to LBJ, and now just maybe it might be time for LeBron to The Greek Freak. We will see if he can carry the league on his shoulders, but in prime time in the NBA Finals he looks the part right now.

Speaking of historic we are also seeing something that has never been done and might not ever be done again.

He is everything that was promised when he came to play in MLB. Starting the All Star game on the mound, hitting in the home run derby, it’s his world and we re just living in it.
